Top young singers from Canada, the United States and Mexico perform excerpts from bel canto opera repertoire in the intimate venue of the 1895 Lunenburg Academy on Saturday, June 16 beginning at 8 p.m.
Italian for “beautiful singing,” Bel canto is a style that was popular in Italian opera from the mid-18th to early 19th centuries. The three kings of bel canto were Rossini, Donizetti, and Bellini.
As the name implies, the focus of bel canto is on the music, especially the voice, with plenty of room for rubato (the freedom to slow down and speed up), while lead characters often have cadenzas (short passages for the solo voice in an improvised-like style) which allow them to showcase their voices.
Presented by the Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance, the recital will be under the direction of acclaimed artistic director, pianist and opera coach Giulio Zappa, with whom these singers will be working from June 4-16.
Tickets are $25 per person and are available from Shop on the Corner, 263 Lincoln St, or by calling LAMP at 902-634-8667. University and NSCC students are admitted for $12 with ID, and there are up to 10 free tickets available for youth 18 and under; simply call to reserve at the number above.
