Music of Maritime Canada and beyond

Chris Norman – flutes, pipes, vocals
Andy Thurston – guitars, mandola
Kris Saebo – bass
Lunenburg’s own; renowned flute-player Chris Norman is one of the foremost tradition bearers playing the music of Maritime Canada: dances, airs and songs from Nova Scotia, Acadia and Quebec as well as roots music of Scotland, Ireland, Brittany, the U.S.A. Dazzling arrangements featuring one of the finest traditional flute players of our time with pipes, whistle, guitar, mandola, and vocals bring music bursting to life, leaving audiences with a deeper appreciation of how traditional music sings across the centuries with timeless beauty, wit, and vitality.

Guitarist Andy Thurston has been a mainstay in the East Coast traditional music scene for decades and has accompanied many of the area’s most renowned musicians. Andy has a BA in classical guitar from Towson State University and has taught guitar at Catonsville Community College for 25 years. Well versed in a variety of styles, he infuses elements of jazz and swing guitar into the music of Ireland, Scotland, Quebec & Maritime Canada.

Kris Saebo leads a versatile musical life in New York City as a double bass soloist, chamber musician, recording artist, electric bassist, composer/arranger, and teaching artist. Kris is a founding member of Decoda, the affiliate ensemble of Carnegie Hall and performs regularly with A Far Cry, NOVUS NY, New York Classical Players, Ensemble Connect, The Chris Norman Ensemble, and the orchestra for the Broadway show Matilda.

ABOUT BOXWOOD: The Boxwood Festival and Workshop returns this July for its 22nd year in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, bringing together an amazing group of artists from across the spectrum of traditional folk (Irish, Scottish, Breton, Cape Breton, French Canadian, Appalachian, Ozark & Old-Time) baroque, and renaissance music & dance for a week of classes, workshops, performances, sessions and social dancing. The deep connections between traditional music, song, dance, language and food of Maritime Canada are at the heart of our program as musicians, dancers and singers alike experience and discover the fire that connects their traditions.
