Returning to LAMP for the third time, we have the phenomenal Dover Quartet! This outstanding ensemble catapulted to international stardom following a stunning sweep of the 2013 Banff Competition, at which they won every prize. Named the Cleveland Quartet Award-winner, and honored with the coveted Avery Fisher Career Grant, the Dover has become one of the most in-demand ensembles in the world. The Quartet’s rise from up-and-coming young ensemble to occupying a spot at the top of their field has been “practically meteoric” (Strings). With its burnished warmth, incisive rhythms, and natural phrasing, the Quartet’s distinctive sound has helped confirm its status as “the young American string quartet of the moment” (New Yorker).
The Dover Quartet serves as the quartet-in-residence for the Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University, Chamber Music Northwest, Artosphere, the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival, and Peoples’ Symphony in New York, and was recently named the first-ever quartet-in-residence for the Kennedy Center.
In 2018-19 the quartet performs more than a hundred concerts around North America, including performances at the Kennedy Center, San Francisco Performances, the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, Spivey Hall, Boston’s Celebrity Series, the Chamber Music Society of Detroit, and Carnegie Hall. They’ll also tour Hong Kong, Europe, and Australia, perform collaborations with Emanuel Ax, Inon Barnatan, Peter Serkin, Anthony McGill, and Roomful of Teeth. They’ll premiere new works by Caroline Shaw and Matan Porat, and participate in maverick filmmaker and cultural icon David Lynch’s Los Angeles Festival of Disruption.
Here at LAMP to work with emerging quartets, the Dover will perform in concert on the afternoon of Sunday, May 19. The program will include Bartok’s Quartet No. 3, Tchaikovsky’s Quartet No. 3 in E-flat minor, Op. 30 and From Frozen Amber by American composer Mason Bates.
Tickets are $35 and can be reserved now by calling LAMP at 902-634-8667. They can also be purchased at Shop on the Corner, 263 Lincoln St, Lunenburg. University and NSCC students pay just $12 with a student card, and LAMP provides up to 10 tickets for youth 18 and under at no charge – all you have to do is call to reserve those at 902-634-8667.
The Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance is a global center for advanced studies of performance and music interpretation located in the landmark Lunenburg Academy, a National Historic Site built in 1895. LAMP is grateful for the support of Canada Heritage, the Nova Scotia Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage, Arts Nova Scotia, the Town of Lunenburg and other corporate and private partners.
